This week in Reception…

Another busy week of learning.

First, we shared the story of the Nativity  and named all the different characters. We talked about what they did in the story and created some images to put on our RE display. We have been very busy singing, acting, rehearsing our lines and getting on the stage practising our Nativity play.

Today was very exciting as we got to have lunch in our classroom. Our behaviour was amazing despite being a little squashed! This change in room is because the hall is being prepared for the Christmas Fayre. Remember to join us in the hall after school…we heard rumours that Santa is coming to visit us!

It’s that time of year again…

There is a definite feel in school that preparations for Christmas are slowly starting.  I’ve seen scripts on the photocopier and heard Christmas hymns being played in the hall.  (We are still a little in denial that it’s the 25th today!).

But seems we are thinking about the coming month, here are a couple of things that might be worth thinking about.

Firstly, sleep.  This time of year is very tiring for our children with all the changes and heightened expectations.  Sometimes there is less down time with assessments and rehearsals, Mass and singing.  And there are so many benefits from sleeping.  For adults, as well as children, here are some links to share around how much sleep is advised and why.

And secondly, gifts.  I’m sure your children have an idea of something they might like for Christmas (!) but I thought this factsheet with ideas for toys to support speech was a lovely idea.  Some of these would be great shared presents within the family so everyone can join in.  Do you have any Christmas traditions which include family games?  I’m hoping this year to avoid ‘Pie-face’ by directing the family towards Snakes and Ladders…

Hope you all enjoy the last week before Advent starts on Sunday and that you have a blessed season.

This week in Reception…

Our theme this week was based on the story ‘Whatever Next!’ by Jill Murphy. We shared the story and discussed with our talk partners what happened at the beginning, middle and end. We created lists of what we would take to the moon.

We also shared the story of Elmer when we learned about the phoneme /e/. This was a favourite book to share in the reading tent.

Making rockets to go to the moon helped us learn the names of 3D (solid) shapes. We used reclaimed materials and different joining techniques to create space structures.

In RE, we have been learning about the different characters in the Nativity story. Remember to practise your lines, which are stuck in your reading record, and bring your costumes or costume slips in.

We Love Reading in Year Two!

This week Year 2 continued to work on developing our comprehension skills.  We really enjoyed sharing some funny stories and thinking about the characters in them. We enjoyed talking about what we liked about books we have read and thought about whether or not we would recommend them to a friend.FullSizeRender We looked carefully at verbs this week and learned all about what happens to verbs in the past tense.  We found out what happens when we add -ed or -ing.

In our Maths lessons we were learning about finding missing numbers.  We used lots of unmarked number lines and found useful benchmark numbers to help us to place the missing numbers correctly.

We were allocated parts in our Christmas production and worked hard on reading the script in class.  We continued to learn our songs and we are sounding really good.  Parents please don’t forget to book a costume with Mrs. S if you want to hire one from the PSFA.
