We have all been working on developing Building Learning Power at St Margaret Clitherow for about 18 months now. This is all about ensuring that our children are ENGAGED in their learning and are ENABLED to TAKE CONTROL of their LEARNING journey. It is based upon the research of Professor Guy Claxton but we have adapted it for our school context. The results are amazing!
Recently Learning Advocates (teachers) from JHN visited and were really impressed with the independence and resilience of our children when approaching all sorts of learning. This is something that our colleagues at JHN are working at developing further still and it’s great to be In partnership with our colleagues in secondary education – we can all work together to make a brighter future for our young people on their exciting learning journey through life.
You may remember an evening workshop in school which aimed to explain how we can use building learning power in maths to help our children. I thought that it might be useful to share with you again one of our handouts from this session:
I took a walk around school this evening after the children had gone to look for evidence of BLP in the classrooms. This is what I found…
That’s the 17 learning attributes that we work towards in year 6!
You can’t miss it really!
Then there are the slogans. These are the phrases that you might expect to hear as you wander through school that encourage a good attitude towards learning around the school ….
It’s brilliant to be centred on how we all tick in relation to our learning – school isn’t about just getting it right, it’s about how we focus our efforts when we are being challenged; life isn’t easy and school should be a preparation for this because “getting it wrong is the start of getting it right!”
Well done everyone – we are all learners together!
